Breakthrough . . . and Disappointment

So many of you have been praying that we would have extended visiting hours with mom. Today, that finally happened. Apparently Mom was quite agitated with her doctors last night, and very uncooperative. In frustration, I think the doctors finally decided, "What could it hurt to listen to the family?" They agreed to let one of us be with mom at all times from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM. And, wow, did Mom respond.

For about the first hour mom was under heavy sedation. She did not respond much to our words. By 11:00, mom was awake, and she was trying to talk. By 11:30 the words were flowing. I bet mom talked for over 4 hours today. For the most part, she made sense. We talked about what was going on in the hospital. We told her about her need to cooperate with the doctors. We asked her about her care and her worries.

We were so excited. And then, at about 4:50 the nurses wanted to do some therapy with mom and she asked that my dad be in the room with her when this was being done. They refused her request and we think she went into a panic attack. Ten minutes later when we went in to see her she was unresponsive and sleeping again. This had us quite worried, however a subsequent call from a doctor at International SOS, after consulting with the American Hospital Doctors, assured us that mom was doing fine now. They thought that she was just exhausted from a lot of hard work and excitement. The doctors are now saying that they don't think she'll be moved from ICU until Monday. We believe that if she could just keep fighting, and be like she is with us when we are not around, they would let her out and we could be with her overnight.

Dad took a fall at the hotel tonight. He was carrying his computer when he fell, and it is no longer working (His computer with all of the pictures that he has taken from his time in Turkey). He hurt his hand, but says that it is feeling fine now. He's more upset about the computer not working. He is ready to leave Istanbul and never come back. Please keep Dad and Jen in your prayers as they have been here well over two weeks and are seeing no end in sight. It is just so disappointing.

We're hoping to have a full day of encouragement with mom tomorrow. Thanks so much for all of your prayers.

Brian, thanks for your diligence in writing these reports. People continually ask me for updates on your mom. I try to point them to this blog. I hope you all can feel our support, even though we're so far away. It must be difficult to feel so alone. Please pass hugs along to Gordon and Jenny. We really miss them. - Angie Thomas

Brian, your updates are very helpful in knowing just how our prayers need to be expressed. Two thoughts to share with you, your dad and sister. First, none of what you are experiencing is a surprise to our God. He is still Sovereign and in control. Also, the words of the old song ring in my mind - "The Lord knows the way through the wilderness. All I have to do is follow." Grace and peace to you in the midst of the storm. -Bill Peterson

Wow. Such a day of encouragement and frustration. I will pray that your dad can get the data off the HDD when he gets back stateside (or even before then?), but in the meantime it is good to hear the your mom is doing a lot better and able to have lucid conversation. It is difficult to imagine her in that kind of state when all my memories of her are so bright and cheerful. Our prayers are still with you and I hope you all can come home soon.

Brian,
Please tell your Mom that she has constantly been in our prayers. I have been jolted awake by the Spirit at 2-3 in the morning to pray and God constantly reminds me throughout the day to pray for Bea. Please give our love to Gordon and Jenny. I'm sure you are reminding Bea that "Greater is He who is in you that he who is in the world". Lee said to tell your Dad he certainly understands his concern over his computer. We are now in North Carolina and this is our "link".
We are so thankful you are there Brian and thanks for keeping us updated. It helps us know how to pray.
Our love to all the Schulenburgs. -Lee and Jane

Dearest Bea,
Our prayers continue to be with you. Even little Ellie, who you prayed so passionatly for in the past, speaks your name in prayer.
Last week we faced some health challenges with her and felt discouraged. As we sang in church this morning the chorus of one song pierced our hearts. May they be an encouragment to you, Gordon, Brian and Jennifer as well.
Walking by faith, not by sight, Vicki
"Til He returns or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I will stand."
